Sterling silver vesta - Chester 1912/3

$160.00

This small sterling silver vesta was originally created to hold matches and would have been attached to watch chains or chatelaines but they have become highly collectable and popular as pendants that can contain small treasures or necessities (photo, precious note, medications etc). The ivy engraved on the vesta would have been widely understood at the time it was made as a reference to loyalty, fidelity, enduring love and eternal life and was a result a popular motif in jewellery and other gifts for friends or loved ones. The vacant shield cartouche on the front means it can be personalised if the new own would like. It is in very good condition though it has sustained a knock to the right long edge, but it doesn't affect its functionality and isn't particularly noticeable. I haven't had it tested but I think the bail is probably not sterling silver as it has a slightly golden cast. Internally traces of the original gilding can still be observed. I haven't polished it back to its original shine as I personally prefer a bit of patina as it is over a hundred years old but if you would like it polished to a high shine please just let me know and I'll happily do so. While the hallmarks for Chester in 1912/3 are very clear and easily read, unfortunately the maker's mark was struck at an angle and can't be conclusively identified.
