Pair of antique hand-carved gothic revival English oak candlesticks

$349.00

These superbly hand-carved pair of gothic revival English blonde oak candlesticks in the Pugin style are my find of the month. Sadly, I don't currently have the space to store substantial antique furniture but I love wood so the craftsmanship in these intricately turned and hand-carved candlesticks immediately stood out. They are incredible! You can see the beginnings of the arts and crafts movement in pieces like this with their focus on craftsmanship. The stepped circular bases are decorated with a wave and bead design flowing into tapered flutes with a collar above. The centre section is finely carved with a barley twist section terminating with a double stepped circular collar over which the upper section has two different bands of foliate carving. At the top, the candle holders are inset with brass liners. They are just under 30 cm tall and they are nice and stable on 12.5 cm bases. This remarkable pair date from around 1860. It was love at first sight for me - they deserve to take pride of place in a new home.

Given their age and use the condition is outstanding with the exception of a small burn mark and a small patch of discolouration to the brass liner to one candlestick, both shown in close up in the photos.

Please look closely at the photographs as they form part of the description and get in touch if you have any questions.
