Georgian Embroidered and Painted Artwork, c. 1820
$595.00
This exceedingly rare survivor is about 200 years old, dating to the Georgian period c. 1820. Given its age, it is remarkably fresh. The skin, hair and facial features of the girls and the landscape on the right are the only painted details - the rest of the artwork is cleverly embroidered showing the light, shadow and texture of the clothing, architecture, foliage, cat, bowl and spoon as well as the little morsel of food the girl is about to eat. I was blown away by the skills of this artist.
The back clearly shows the silk backing where the paper has degraded and there is a rectangular shadow where a now missing label would most likely have originally recorded the name of the work and artist. It is sad that it has been lost but the work itself is still in wonderful condition and will continue to be enjoyed for many years to come.
The glass features a simple verre eglomise border in black and gold. The frame itself is showing its age with some minor losses but could easily be restored. I’ve contemplated undertaking it myself but given its rarity and age a professional restoration would be more sensible. To ensure its longevity its next custodian will want to provide it a home out of direct sunlight.
Please look closely at the photographs as they form part of the description and also include the dimensions. If you have any questions about this stunning piece of history please get in touch anytime. These sell for thousands of dollars internationally so this rare survivor is also very well priced.
