Flautist kokeshi by Sekiguchi Sansaku - vintage 1960s

I was so thrilled to find this fabulous c.1960 vintage kokeshi here in Wellington, New Zealand. It is a sosaku kokeshi, which are creative original kokeshi inspired by traditional kokeshi but not bound by the same strict regional forms.

This flautist is by Sekiguchi Sansaku and it came to me with the kokeshi with the hair ornament listed separately by Izumi Ueda. I believe the two have spent their lives together as companions. The flautist is showing its age with significant fading but it is otherwise in very good condition. These vintage kokeshi are highly prized by collectors and bring a lovely warmth to a space.
