Princess Mary‘s Gift Book, Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1914 - First edition
Hodder & Stoughton
$55.00
Princess Mary‘s Gift Book was published in 1914 with the profits from the sale given to the Queen’s “Work for Women“ fund, which was acting in conjunction with the National Relief Fund. It includes stories by some of the best known writers of the era including J.M. Barrie, Arthur Conan Doyle and Rudyard Kipling. It is heavily illustrated throughout with black-and-white illustrations and 14 tipped in colour reproductions of paintings created specifically for the book. The paintings were also sold in aid of the Queen‘s cause. This copy is showing its age. The spine is a little loose and there is some foxing to the edges of the pages, though thankfully the colour illustrations are completely unaffected. There is also some damage to the back cover. This beautiful book would be a lovely addition to a collection of children's literature or for anyone interested in fabulous illustrations.
