Pair of Victorian Stevengraphs - The Present Time - 60 Miles an Hour and The Good Old Days
Stevengraph
$219.00
These two Victorian Stevengraphs would be a fabulous gift for anyone with a love of textile arts or the history of transportation. These small works were woven in silk in the late nineteenth century (c.1880s). Named for their inventor Thomas Stevens, they were woven on Jacquard looms. The Good Old Days depicts a stage coach while The Present Time - 60 Miles an Hour shows the modern (for the time) and faster train.
This pair have been in New Zealand for a very long time and were framed at Auckland’s John Leech Gallery, which was established in 1855 and is still in business today. They are showing signs of their age with some fading and deterioration but they are still full of charm. The silk works are about 146mm x 54mm and the frame is 235mm x 150mm. There is a lovely contrast between the two modes of transport.
Please look closely at the photographs as they form an important part of the description. If you have any questions please get in touch (contact@eldercroftandsons.co.nz).
