The contrast provided by the distinct band of wood around the top of this bowl gives it real style. It has some minor knocks and surface damage consistent with age and use but is overall in very good vintage condition.

Whanganui-based firm Sovereign Woodworkers Ltd produced a wide range of wooden wares usually highlighting the beauty of our native timber so I was surprised to find this Pinus Radiata salad bowl but it is nonetheless beautifully made and has an elegant simplicity. The firm was established in 1949 by Austin Brasell, Arnold (Arnie) Burling and Wyn Hart. Its heyday was the 1960s and it remained popular throughout the 1970s, eventually closing in 1992. They produced a vast range of products including trays, pencil cases, coffee tables, bowls, ashtrays, 21st birthday keys, rulers, book ends and picture frames.
