This beautiful little vintage hand-turned kauri box features a stunning enamel panel in the lid. This small enamel artwork would have taken many firings and I think it is likely the work of Elizabeth (aka Biddy) Fraser-Davies who literally wrote the book providing guidance in a pre-internet age for those who wanted to learn the art of enamelling here in New Zealand.

Her book ‘The Enamelists’ Handbook’ was published in Auckland in 1988 and it provides a step by step introduction to the process and includes images of a very similar enamel-topped wooden box. She favoured the use of silver wire to separate the sections in her cloisonné pieces and this small piece is very much in her style and uses silver wire. I have seen similar pieces by her at auction before. The internal markings indicate native kauri wood has been used but the markings to the base are sadly rubbed. I’m not one to gamble but I think she is by far the most likely maker… sadly she passed away in 2018 so I cannot ask and be absolutely certain. She was a fascinating person and in retirement became involved in cheese making with raw milk, challenging local authorities rules to build a new business - the award-winning Cwmglyn Farmhouse Cheese. So in addition to being a talented artist she is also a fantastic example for all in following your passions no matter how old you are.

Please look closely at the photographs as they are a vital part of the description. If you have any questions at all please don't hesitate to get in touch directly (contact@eldercroftandsons.co.nz).
