Graeme McIntyre Black Maire Bowl inset with Paua, 2008

I think black maire is my favourite of the many beautiful native timbers here in New Zealand. It is one of the hardest native woods making it challenging to work with but it has such a lovely grain and rich colour. This beautiful bowl was made in 2008 by Graeme McIntyre. It is truly a piece of art - every element has been carefully considered.
There are three graduating paua discs inset in the rim, which is elegantly recessed to give a fine edge internally. I particularly appreciate that McIntyre gave as much attention to the base as the top. Its elegant curving smooth surface is contrasted with a textured surface to the foot of the bowl. There is a small crack in the middle of one side that will likely have been present in the wood prior to the bowl being made. It has had a little water damage to the surface, which is highlighted in the photos. It has an incredibly smooth surface and would be a fantastic addition to any home. It is 284mm in diameter and 63mm high.
