Fabulous Victorian walnut marquetry box - writing, sewing and jewellery

My obsession with antique boxes may have reached its zenith with this piece. I’ve had writing slopes, sewing boxes and jewellery boxes before but this rare Victorian treasure combines all three in the ultimate travel companion. There is a lovely oval mirror with beveled edge in the lid, spaces to store jewellery as well as places for a thimble, needles and in-built pin cushions on the upper level. When the upper level is removed, it folds out into a lovely writing surface complete with its original brass topped inkwells on either side. There are some inlay losses and repairs that are evidence of its long life. Over its approximately 150 years, there has also been some wear to the interior and it has lost the little ribbon or fabric piece that made it easy to lift the writing surface to access the storage below but it would be a very easy repair. This antique inlaid walnut marquetry box is truly a delight. The sterling silver thimble is for display only but we have some thimbles for sale separately.
