Pair of Jan Cockell saggar-fired burnished porcelain pots - late 1980s

$72.00
These two fabulous saggar-fired burnished porcelain pots were made by talented NZ potter Jan Cockell in the late 1980s. They are not glazed - the orange flashing is the result of the combination of charcoal and seaweed. Cockell has written about her process in Facebook posts which provide fascinating insights into the techniques she has used and when pieces were made. These small pots were seated in charcoal with small sprigs of seaweed placed on top which melted at around 1220°C. The two different shapes and the varying patterns on the surface of each vessel make for a fascinating pairing of similar yet unique pieces. Cockell is well known for creating circular forms like these - both are just under 100mm high and around 100mm in diameter.
