I always buy these mid-century wooden marquetry pieces when I see them. I love the mixing of the wood grains - especially in the lovely lid on this piece. It is a lovely piece of vintage kiwiana, likely dating to the 1960s.

Whanganui-based firm Sovereign Woodworkers Ltd produced a wide range of wooden wares highlighting the beauty of our native timber. It was established in 1949 by Austin Brasell, Arnold (Arnie) Burling and Wyn Hart. The firms heyday was the 1960s and it remained popular throughout the 1970s, eventually closing in 1992. They produced a vast range of products including trays, pencil cases, coffee tables, bowls, ashtrays, 21st birthday keys, rulers, bookends and picture frames.

The labels are present but showing their age and there is a little deterioration to the varnish again consistent with age and use.

Please look closely at the photographs as they form an important part of the description. If you are based in Wellington, free delivery is available in the central, southern and eastern suburbs, or for $5 in the northern and western suburbs.
