Alan Mulgan, Home: a Colonial's Adventure, Longmans, Green and Co., London - New Impression, 1930
$25.00
Alan Mulgan (1881-1962) was a celebrated New Zealand journalist, writer and broadcaster. He was a significant force in the world of New Zealand letters in the first half of the twentieth century.Mulgan’s book 'Home: a Colonial's Adventure' was first published in 1927, a time when many New Zealanders still referred to England as home. Their attachment was not merely nostalgic or sentimental, it was also economic. Exports and imports readily reflected this – New Zealand was Britain’s farm in the south and Britain was New Zealand’s factory in the north. The book includes a prefatory note by J. C. Squire and five wood-cuts by Clare Leighton. It is in good condition for its age with some wear to the cover and, interestingly, there appears to have been a cutting flaw with a section toward the back having shorter pages than the rest of the book. It would be a lovely addition to a collection of books by New Zealand. Alan Mulgan's son John went on to write the New Zealand classic 'Man Alone', published in 1939.
