Delft plate c. 1760s, Anthonij Pennis, De Twee Scheepjes

It is rare for me to source a piece as old as this here in Wellington, New Zealand. This Delft plate was made around the same time that James Cook was mapping New Zealand on his first the voyage here in 1769/70. It is marked for Anthonij Pennis (d. 1770) at the De Twee Scheepjes (The Two Little Ships) factory in the late 18th century. The style of decoration belongs to the chinoiserie tradition popular at the time but still includes clear European elements. There is some damage to the edges of the plate consistent with age and use and common to Delftware of this period. It is 260mm long, 210mm wide and 40mm high.
