Continental 835 Silver Souvenir Spoon - Ypres

I recently acquired a lovely small collection of souvenir silver spoons from a New Zealander's voyage to Europe in the mid-twentieth century. Each spoon tells a story of their journey and this one feels especially poignant. It is unsurprising that a New Zealander journeying to Europe in the 1950s would stop in Ypres, as most adults at that time would likely have had a close family member or friend who had fought there in World War 1. Many New Zealand soldiers also lost their lives there and are now buried in the region.

The spoon has an elegant design and is in excellent condition. It is marked 835 to the back of the spoon and when I took it in for testing it was indicating 90% silver so above the 835 (83.5%) standard. Continental silver is often 800, 835, or 900 during this period.

Please look closely at the photographs as they form an important part of the description. If you are based in Wellington, free delivery is available in the central, southern and eastern suburbs, or for $5 in the northern and western suburbs. If you would like further information, please get in touch directly (contact@eldercroftandsons.co.nz).
