Rare Art Deco Shelley Earthenware Centerpiece Bowl – "Jazz Circles" (Pattern 8462 / Shape E50)

Art Deco ceramics were one of my first loves and this piece is an outstanding example. It is an exceptionally rare, museum-quality Art Deco earthenware table centerpiece bowl produced by Shelley (formerly Wileman & Co.) in Staffordshire, England. This substantial 32 cm (12.5 inches) bowl features the highly collectible and vibrant "Jazz Circles" pattern (Pattern No. 8462), dating precisely to the 1925–1928 production window.

This specific piece is a true rarity due to its striking, uncommon colorway: a bold, glossy yellow exterior that beautifully contrasts with a rich, matte black interior housing the bold geometric Jazz Circles motif.

The base features the official printed Shelley backstamp, alongside the hand-painted factory pattern number 8462 and the internal earthenware shape code E50.

The bowl is structurally sound with no chips, cracks, or restorations.  As you can see, in keeping with Shelley earthenware of this specific 1920s era, there is some honest surface wear and flaking to the delicate, unglazed matte black interior surface. This is a known characteristic of the period's matte glaze formulation and does not detract from the immense visual impact or scarcity of this large-scale centerpiece.
